Aday after Qualcomm launched Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, its latest chipset for premium smartphones, the tech major has introduced the world’s first 5nm chip designed for PCs. Named Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, the chipset promises “extreme performance and efficiency” on laptops.
Unveiled at the company’s annual Snapdragon Tech Summit, the new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is meant to power computers with a premium, ultra-thin form factor. It claims an 85 per cent faster operations for multi-tasking than the previous generation, with up to 57 per cent boost in system-level performance.
Other than improvements in processing prowess, Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 has been optimised for connectivity, and can switch seamlessly between 5G, 4G LTE, and Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. In numbers, the chip claims speeds of up to 10 Gbps, thanks to the integrated Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF system or up to 7.5Gbps with the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF system. There is also the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 system to deliver Wi-Fi 6E speeds of up to 3.6 Gbps.
On its product page, Qualcomm also mentions that the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 comes with Qualcomm AI Engine, which promises 29+ TOPS of acceleration, up to 3 times greater than what was seen on the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2. It even claims enterprise-grade security right from the chip to the cloud. This is thanks to a layered secure boot and the new Microsoft Pluton TPM architecture during the start, and other security features like Windows Hello face and fingerprint login. It also appoints runtime memory encryption and connection health monitoring to help keep data and connectivity secure.
Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 also bets big on video and audio experiences in its laptops. The chipset comes with support for up to 4K HDR video up to 24 megapixels and the latest generation 3A (Auto focus, Auto White Balance, and Auto Exposure). For high-quality audio, it supports Hi-Fi audio and AI accelerated Echo-cancellation and noise suppression (ECNS). The net result is meant to enhance experiences like video conferencing in Teams or Zoom and other such use cases.
With the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, Qualcomm also promises support for over 25 hours of backup to a machine on a single charge. As per Qualcomm, this is twice the battery backup of most PCs which are prevalent today.
