There are a lot of technical resources out there that give the basics on how to build an online digital marketing funnel. Learning the basics is the first step and while it’s great to know the foundational concepts of how to do it, one point that is often a misnomer is why you’re doing it. A common answer is to say, “Well, I want to make more money”.
But, is money your sole driving factor? Is money the only thing that propelled you to become an entrepreneur in the first place? If the answer to that is “no,” then let’s explore building an online marketing funnel from a deeper perspective.
Lead With Passion and Money Will Follow
You could indiscriminately utilize all of the tricks to building a marketing funnel by pushing your SEM strategy or spamming every possible lead you can think of, but is it the direction you really want to go? While there is some merit to chasing down as many opportunities as you possibly can, you could end up wasting a lot of time and resources.
As you look to build your funnel, start with clearly defining your personal why for the mission of your company if you haven’t already done so. Then, take a moment as you review each opportunity to ask yourself why you feel the need to approach them in the manner you are. By doing so, you can more clearly define the goal you are seeking to meet and craft a better experience for both of you and the company.
Define Your Priorities
Most entrepreneurs adopt the mindset of “Do or Die. There is no Plan B”. Shedding the excess baggage of failed opportunities, toxic people in your business and personal life, and adopting a more proactive approach will help you avoid the pitfalls of only being reactive.
Above all, stop making excuses for yourself. Once you have a clearly defined priority, don’t allow yourself to slip into the thought process of why you can’t do it. Focus on all the ways you can make it happen, then make it happen.
Stay Ethical
Applying the fundamentals of building a funnel is the easy part, really. But, ask yourself how your strategy is going to come across to those you seek to reach. Crafting the experience of your visitors is, literally, a powerful psychological tool that you are the master of. If you devise a way to test every part of your strategy against an ethical standard, you can make sure that your approach conveys sincere servitude to your prospects.
People are becoming much more aware of shady tactics in trying to persuade them out of their hard-earned money. The last thing you want is for your reputation to fall into the bogus business category. On the other hand, trying too hard to convince prospects that you’re acting ethically can also backfire and cause suspicion.

The key is transparency. Using real testimonial quotes from customers and making it easy for people to leave their own testimonials will show that you are acting with transparency. And, actions speak louder than words. Allow others to freely speak their minds about your business and be prepared to address concerns. But, also be wary of that transparency being weaponized against you by competitors and know the ways to protect your brand and reputation.
And if you really want to get serious about your marketing efforts, consider taking some courses, or even enrolling in a digital marketing bootcamp.
