Osteoarthritis is the most common and long-lasting form joint condition. Millions of people of different ages are affected due to this disease. This condition usually occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of bone wears down over time.

However, osteoarthritis can damage any joint in your body; this disorder most commonly affects the joints in the knees, hands, hips and spine. Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease. This disease is a leading cause of joint disability, affects more than 30 million people in the United States.

Causes of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis usually occurs when the cushions at the end of bones in joints gradually deteriorate. These cushions are slippery tissues that permit nearly frictionless joint motion and commonly known as cartilage.  If the cartilage is worn down completely, the bones will rub more with each other. The older you are, the more wear and tear you will face.

Some other causes of joint damage are:

  • Dislocated joints
  • Ligaments Injuries
  • Torn Cartilage

Risk Factors

Some factors that increase the risk of osteoarthritis are

  • Obesity – Carrying extra weight contribute to osteoarthritis in many ways, the more you weigh, the higher your risk.
  • Sex – Women are more likely the victim of osteoarthritis
  • Older age – As you know, the risk of osteoarthritis increases with age
  • Joint Injuries – Some injuries such as when playing football or from an accident may increase the risk of osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis Diagnosis

Osteoarthritis is a slow-developing disease that can be hard enough to diagnose until it starts to cause the painful or debilitating syndrome. Sometimes X-ray and MRI scan are needed to fully diagnose the disease. These tests use radio waves and a magnetic field to create images of bones and soft tissues.

Treatment of Osteoarthritis

Exercise

Physical activities strengthen the muscles of the body and may help to relieve stiffness. Choose gentle low impact activities for at least 20 to 30 minutes every other day. Yoga can also play an important role to improve joint flexibility.
